Art & Design

Intent

At Beetham C of E School we value Art and Design as an important part of the broad and balanced curriculum. Art should provide the opportunity for all pupils to produce creative and imaginative work.

Art and Design provides children with the opportunity to develop and extend their skills and express their own thoughts, ideas and interests and to appreciate the work of others. It should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, giving them the skills and confidence to experiment and create their own pieces of art which reflect their individual interests, abilities and creativity.

It should allow them to develop their emotional expression and further enhance their personal, social and emotional development.

Through the teaching of Art and Design, children will become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting and sculpting as well as other selected crafts eg. collage, printing, weaving and pattern. The children will demonstrate skills progression, knowledge progression and will be able to demonstrate their own skills in a variety of ways.

Pupils will study the work of a range of artists, artisans and designers and will learn how their work has influenced both society and other artists. They will have many opportunities to create original pieces that show a range of influences and styles that they have studied.

Implementation

We ensure that skills and knowledge are built on year by year.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through both child led and directed activities. They have the opportunity to:

  • Explore colour and how colour can be changed.
  • Explore textures and the look and feel of different media and materials.
  • Develop skills in the use of a selection of appropriate tools, realising that these tools can be used for a purpose, and be able to use them competently.
  • Experiment to create different textures.
  • Use different media and materials to express their own ideas.
  • Develop their understanding of a range of media and materials in order to manipulate and create different effects.

Key Stage 1 and 2

Skills are taught through rolling programmes linked to topics. Children will:

  • Develop their own ideas and use a range of materials to design and create pieces of art by drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and textiles.
  • Take inspiration from great, classic and modern artists to be able to reference and develop a wide range of art and design techniques.
  • Develop techniques, including control and use of materials through experimentation and developing increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
  • Know how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the creativity and wealth of our nation.

Impact

  • Children in the Foundation Stage are assessed within the Expressive Arts and Design area of the EYFS Framework and their progress is tracked termly.
  • For KS1 and KS2 children teachers use ongoing assessment throughout the year to inform future lessons and to ensure the children are supported and challenged as needed.
  • Children become confident in using different media, materials and tools in art and design and their level of enjoyment of the subject is increased.
  • Children use technical vocabulary and gain a range of skills and processes they can apply to their work.
  • Children improve their enquiry skills and are aware of the impact of art and design on the world. They can talk about famous artists and designers they have studied.
  • Children have the ability to plan, create evaluate and analyse their own work. All children can speak confidently about their art and design work and their skills.
