Design Technology

Developing our creativity through designing and making.

Design Technology

At Beetham CE School, our Design and Technology curriculum allows all children to develop their creativity through designing and making, either individually or as members of a group. We encourage the children to design and make products for their own needs and for the needs of others.

Evaluating their product is an essential part of the design process and the children are given time to consider how they could adapt and improve what they have made. We endeavour to make cross curricular links, in order to motivate the children and give meaning to their learning.

We ensure skills and knowledge are built on year by year and all projects/design tasks include the opportunity for research, designing, making and evaluating. Teaching in Design and Technology always ensures that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks they are undertaking. The following key skills are taught in short, focused blocks:

  • Food
  • Materials
  • Textiles
  • Electricals and Electronics
  • Construction
  • Mechanics

  • Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in Design and Technology that they will be able to apply to other areas of the curriculum.
  • Children will have the ability to design, make and evaluate products against a design criteria.
  • Children will be confident to work independently and as a team member.
  • Children will develop skills they can use beyond school and into adulthood.
